Bad IBX 75GXP 45 GB HDD

I've had two IBM 75GXP 45 GB HDDs fail in the last two month's! Both were new. The first one failed 6 weeks after purchase and was replaced by IBM (shipping at my expense).

The replacement drive failed in about two months. Both times a continuous scratching sound (like a floppy drive w/o floppy) could be heard.

My Maxtor ATA-100 15 Gb drive has been running with problems since I got it a few months ago.

I'm wondering if others are having the same problems with the new IBM drives. My inpression is that they're fast but unrelable... and thats NFG.

Either something's wrong on your end, or you've simply had some very bad luck.
I havent got any first hand experience with the 75GXP's but their previous drives have been extremely reliable.

Is your processor over 733 mhz? If it is then there is as patch for those drives with larger then a 2mb cache. The problem is that the drive shuts down to fast and doesnt clear its large cache, damaging the data. You can do a low level format, reformat, install windows, and apply the patch. Im sorry, ive looked, but I cant find the origional thread, hope this sends you in the right direction. This is a KNOWN issue. The problem is with windows support of large cache drives, not a problem with the drive itself.

I had a defective IBM 75 GXP 30GB and I returned it to IBM.
My drive also made a continuous scratching sound and the drive fitness test from IBM said my drive was defective.

Those scratching noises were the same noises my IBM was making too.

I applied the patch and the drive is fine now.

GASP! Bad IBM drives. First I have ever heard of that happening. I have 6 of them total, I think 4 of the 6 are 75GXP's and they have been running strong for a while, the other 2 are older models that have been running for well over a year. People I have talked to always said the IBM drives were very reliable, maybe you have bad luck!

At work I've seen a fairly large number of them arrive DOA, or fail very shortly after being installed. I don't know if there's a bad batch floating around or what.

I have the 30GB version. Now tell me...what should WinME (or 98) be telling me the size is? It tells me its 28.6GB, is that right? IBM tells me it is, as does my dealer. I'm a bit concerned not only about that, but that when WinME formatted the drive, it said it was "writing off bad sectors". It might just be a standard WinME formatting message now, but I don't know and this is something that did concern the guy from IBM. And can someone email me on this? hagbard72@hotmail.com

Thanks all!

As far as I know, there's nothing wrong with my system. I haven't modified anything for the last 2 months. It's been running beatifully without lockups or crashes. I have good airflow and a good PC power and cooling PS. Maybe it is bad luck that I had two hard drive failures in two months. Never had a failure before that in the last 10 years! Of coarse, I've never had an IBM either. I'm hoping it was a fluke and that my next replacement lasts because its such a hassle.

If you don't apply the patch and you are using a +733Mhz PC with ATA100 HDD and Win98Se/ME then your hard drive will eventually stop working (from what I hear).

I applied the patch (got the link from someone here when I posted a similar message 1 month ago) and it hasn't made a funny sound since.

The patch is also on the MS site. I don't have the link offhand.

Humm.. I just got a brand new 30 gig deskstar and it appears to be making the same noise you are describing.. I hope mine isn't going already.. I have already installed the winME patch to clear the cache on shutdown..

Hey, thanks for answering my question (sarcasm mode off).

But I'll be a nice guy anyway and add to what you said. I've been having some trouble with the drive, and IBM recommeded I add the patch, and my system runs at 650. So, its probably a good idea no matter what you're running at.

Hmm I'm having that problem too. I'm running w2k and it seems to have slown down quite a bit on the disk access. Also if i do a scandisk it takes a really really really really long time. Abnormally long.

Who'd you guys contact to get the drive replaced?

To get a RMA, you first have to run the Drive Fitness Test and report the part number, serial number and return code. I got a Return Code of 0x70.

Call 1-888-IBM-5214 Mon to Fri 8am-7pm CST and be prepared to wait, or leave a message and someone will call you back.

P.S. If you need the replacement drive before you return yours, then you can ask for an advanced shipment, but you'll have to give your credit card number. Also you'll have to return your old drive within 30 days or your card will be charged. The first return, you have to pay for shipping. The second return, they extend you the courtesy of paying for your shipping. The third time, they won't believe you (I guess).

thanks for the emails guys. i called them. I got that same error code and they said to use that wipe disk tool in the drive fitness program. I'm gonna do that and if my drive acts up again it's off to RMA land.

Thanks for the help

PS how long have you had your new drives and have there been anyproblems with the new ones?

I just got a 45gig GXP drive and I'm running Win ME on an athlon 850. I am only running the drive at UDMA/66 so will I still have to apply the patch? Where can I download the patch?

Someone link me please? Thx!

Wow this IBM problem seems to be getting more widespread. After hearing all the problems with there GXP line my next harddrive definatly isnt going to be an IBM or atleast not a GXP. It sounds like this drive has the speed buts its not reliable.

Now you guys got me all scared, I'm running winME, Duron @ 1000, but only at ATA/66. I assume I should patch it, but where's the link?

Or who makes the patch, is it a microsoft patch or an IBM patch?
