Bad HDD?

My parents have a store bought HP 503n computer (POS imo). Every week it seems that files on the drive are getting corrupted causing boot problems. I end up having to re-install WinXP pro every time. I've done full formats trying both NTFS and Fat32 to no avail. Could it just be a bad hard drive? Should I try a low level format? I'd like to just replace the drive, but want to be sure that's the problem before doing so.

Was you friend experiencing the same problem, or something else?
