Bad hard drive?

It's maxtor 40 GB 5400 hard drive. The bios identify it allright but I can't load the OS. It just stops while formatting the drive. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? It's something with the drive because any other drive on the system works fine. Can it be repaired or have to RMA it?
 
Have you run any diagnostics on it? I've never owned a Maxtor drive, but I'm sure there's a utility on their website that you can download to check the drive. If something is wrong with it, send it back to Maxtor. Hard drives aren't the type of thing that most local PC stores can repair.
