bad grammer

*deliberately misspelled to gain attention 😛 Not speaking of one who is unskilled at gramming.

your ~= you, possessive; of you
you're ~= you are
there ~= that place
they're ~= they are
their ~= they, possessive; of them

loose ~= unfastened
lose ~= to be defeated

etc.

Seriously, is this not taught in schools? Do people think it's cool to misspell words and practice improper grammatical habits?
The your=you're; thing in particular has me pissed that it's so common. You'd think that only a small percentage of people would be idiots, yet mastery of very basic English seems to escape the masses.

Why is this?

I agree with Deji... is it SO HARD to learn to spell?! If you have something like dyslexia (as my wife does), fine, but otherwise there really isn't much of an excuse!

Just my opinion, of course 🙂

I've beaten this topic to death, but I'm glad somebody else will pick up where I left off because it still continues to upset me on a near-daily basis, even if I am quiet about it.

Grammar is no longer of much importance in school. So, no, it's not really taught anymore.

Of course not. School is about building self-esteem in our children, so that everyone can be a winner..

I like how you make a post about bad grammar, but cannot spell it correctly. 🙂 It makes me giggle.

I like how you click into a thread and don't read any of it before you comment.

Holy christ people. It was a fuggin' joke.

Is it forum-wide PMS day or what?

While I agree with you, the fact of the matter is that if something is done long enough, it will become common practice. One of my old teacher used to get so mad at people for using incorrect grammar. One day, someone pointed out to her that it wasn't the teachers that dictated proper grammar, but the masses. For example, look at the word ain't. When I was in grade school 20 years ago (suddenly, I feel very, very old...) the word ain't was unacceptable in a classroom setting. It was listed in the dictionary as slang. Today, it is listed as:

Contraction of am not.
Used also as a contraction for are not, is not, has not, and have not.

Probably any English teacher you ask today would tell you that ain't still isn't accepted, but the truth is that as long as the common man uses the word, it is accepted. Get used to it. The English language changes over time. Sometimes it changes for the better; sometimes it don't.
