"Bad" FSB settings?

I can't recall exactly the place I read this, but it was along the lines of "don't use a FSB setting of 81 or 83" because of some reason or another. Could someone reiterate for me what settings to avoid and why? Or am I just totally off the mark here?

well, an 83fsb means a 41.5 mhz PCI, which can cause major headaches.

alot of older hard disk crap out on the 41 mhz bus so be careful.I had no problems with the 83 mhz bus

Mr Big: Actually, a lot of newer hdd:s might also take serious damage if you run them at 40+ MHz for a long time. Furthermore, many sound cards sound like crap if you get that high. Also, many cheap network adapters die already at 38 MHz. So I wouldn't really go above 38-40 MHz on the PCI unless I really had to...

Edit: that looked very "mean" when I said it like that... Sorry, but the hdd:s really can take a lot of damage, especially in DMA. But you're right that older hdd:s are more sensitive, of course. 🙂

do not use a 83fsb i killed a new IBM deskstar GXP-75 a few months ago on my old cel-2 system running a 83fsb for only 1 day so all i can say is Danger Danger Danger.............

Of course, the PCI divider! Thanks guys, that makes inherent sense. I just took a look through MSI BusRacing like I should have in the first place, and it says:

FSB: 75.0 = PCI: 37.5
FSB: 78.0 = PCI: 39.0
FSB: 81.0 = PCI: 40.5
FSB: 83.3 = PCI: 41.7
FSB: 90.0 = PCI: 30.0

Looks like I'd have to jump all the way to a FSB of 90 Mhz to maintain a safe PCI clock speed. Would I run into any problems with a lower-than-normal PCI speed of 30.0 Mhz? I've switched to a FSB of 75.0 for now.
