bad final exam score, talk to the prof?

The final exam was scored inconsistently with how the homeworks and the midterms were graded throughout the semester. I'm supposed to graduate this semester and I would like to know my final grade. I asked my professor if he was holding an office hour and his email response was "no". Not even an explanation or signature. That's all he said in an email which makes me wonder if he hates me or something.

Is it best to email him and ask him for the final grade so I can prepare accordingly? Should I mention that the grading for the final was inconsistent? Like I said, I'm supposed to be graduating this semester.

If it's a matter of going from below a 3.0 to above a 3.0 or going above a 3.9, then do it. Otherwise, who cares? graduate, get plastered, have fun because it's down hill from there....

Unless the grade difference will directly affect your job prospects or entry to graduate school, let it ride.

Go to his office and talk to him. Chances are pretty good you'll be able to catch him there.

You're graduating this semester and you're just now noticing that profs don't bother writing real emails?

I'm planning to go to grad school... and if I get a bad final grade, it might hurt me a lot.

All semester, the midterms and homeworks were graded with partial points. I expected the final exam to be graded similarly and I feel like I got screwed. Got a F.

I'm walking for graduation so I want to bring it to the professor's attention so I know what to expect. My homework grades have been spectacular and my midterm was good. This final score was really low though.

Didn't you get a syllabus of the class on how things are graded ?

i.e homework : 10%
midterms 40%
tests/quizzes 30%
Finals 20% etc.

also ~ is grades curved at all?

Sorry, that sucks. How did you manage to fail the final?

I did, but the professor said it's not set in stone and with a higher exam score, the low scores don't even matter.. I'm not sure if that only applies to low scores on the midterms or on the final too

I sent the professor an email with my concern. I'd rather know what grade to expect instead of getting caught with a surprise and be too late to talk about it.

I don't know why it matters if you know now vs. find out when you're supposed to. The test is over and your grade is done. Unless you plan on BJing your way to a D I don't see the point in bothering your prof about your grade when it won't change anything. In fact you're just another annoyance he has to deal with while he's trying to finalize his grades by the deadline the school sets. Congratulations, you've just pissed off your prof when he still has control over your final grade.

How many emails does the professor get a day? If the professor spent a lot of time answering emails, he would not have time for anything else. So do not take it personally.

As for the grade - its life, not everything is life is fair. Take your grade and move forward.

Take it as it is... you will not get a better grade out of it unless it's an error on the prof's end.

I had a poor final exam last quarter... it turns out I just made it to about above average However, the professor had linear interpolated, so I had received a much lower score than I thought. It was fun working out the whole final with the professor though...

They have a lot of work to cram into those long three hour days. :sneaky:

Unless it's a matter of life and death, who cares. Unless you're going to be a doctor or something, 99% of employers won't even look at your grades. New grads are all clones to them.

How the fuck would it be graded differently and that would be the reason you got an F?

Explain.

Congratulations, you've further pissed off your prof and now hes going to remember you when you are going to take this summer or fall.

Say you were sick that day and could barely do the test and REMIND HIM of your past stellar performance in the class. This should hopefully get you a retest or some other scenario to redeem yourself.

Good luck!

BTW, if this asshole prof gives you any shit, GO SEE the DEPT. HEAD or DEAN. See one or many of these guys--be PERSISTENT.

These fuckers are used to making concessions on behalf of students in such scenarios so don't be a puss and not see them if this unsympathetic asshole Prof. doesn't want to see you.

Do it SOONER rather than later.

OP, it is better to try to sleeze out a D then walk away with an F. Don't listen to anyone else. At least try to reason with the professor, but at the end of the day, don't forget it is TOTALLY YOUR FAULT for not studying properly.

I had the head of a department feel I got shafted on a final grade. But he would not overrule his faculty.

The instructor laid out the guidelines.
If you got an F; it is because you did not take the exam seriously.

Did you just figure you could sign your name and get a passing grade?

Best plan to take the same course the following semester with a different instructor.

Some schools will allow you to erase grades up to two or three courses.
You better start figuring out how and then take the course again applying 110% effort.
