Bad fan, Asus FX5200

Hello, I have the Asus FX5200 vid card.
The crappy fan on it is going out, and the place I bought it at says Asus vid cards are famous for the fan going out as they are not the better ball bearing type.
Here's a picture of the fan setup on mine.

It's held on with two screws it looks like.

I have read some of the older posts here with the Search feature, and instead of getting a new card under replacement for another fan that will fail, I want to put on a Thermaltake Crystal Orb fan.

I understand I need to remove the stock fan from my board, and there is probably a stock heat sink underneath the fan that is epoxied to the GPU.
Has anyone removed one before from a FX5200 card?
How hard is it?

The stock fan is driving me crazy with the sound, and the sooner I get it off and put on one of these Crystal Orb ones the better.

Thanks, Corey

shouldn't be to hard, just be careful, if its glued on try using a hair dryer to heat it up and loosen the glue some. Also make sure you are static free :D

Thanks for the info guy's.
I'll get a chance to pull out my card next weekend, and I'll look it over.
If all looks good, I'll order that Crystal Orb fan.

I was all set to get a PCI slot fan, but the guy at Cooler Guy's did not think it would cool the GPU very good.

new2AMD, you must be Sabre?
I'll be reading back posts on here to catch up on stuff.
Nothing like a computer to spark one's interest in seeing what's out there to make it better.

Terrifies you, in what way?
That sound clip came from a Quake III forum that I use.

The FX5200 granted is not the fastest in the Nvidia lineup, but it does the job great.
All my games look way better than the previous card I had which was a Creative GeForce One with 32 RAM.

It is cured.
I found out my fan you don't have to knock off the fan from the heat sink, as there is none.
You simply use a pair of pliers underneath the vid card and squeeze in two plastic tangs, and the fan pops off.

Stock piece of crap Asus fan.

I ended up buying a ThermalTake Crystal Orb fan, and it goes back on exactly the same way.
This fan moves some serious air, as you can hear it, but at least it's not the irritating sound of a fan on its last legs.

New fan mounted to vid card

I highly recommend doing this if your Asus fan is crappin' out on you, or any brand of video card that has a bad fan.

It's only been on for about 20 minutes, but tonight when I host an Unreal Tournament, I am going to overclock the card some with Asus's utility and see what happens.

I'll also monitor the case temps.
Right now this is the stock temp with no load on the PC except for the browser and mail open.

Looks nice, however I believe if you put it on the other way the "TT" would be in the correct orientation. Not that it affects performance though... :)

OK, I overclocked the vid card some.
Stock is:
Engine 250
Memory 400

Overclocked it to:
Engine 275
Memory 460

The temp for the motherboard and CPU went up about 10 degrees each.
Port Probe picture

I may try it again later with it unclocked and see if it's a little cooler.
10 degrees higher for each, good or bad being overclocked?

Do you have any external sensors like a digidoc 5 to watch the vid card temps?

30 celcius is WAY within range. You really only had a 5 degree change and thats fine.
