Bad experience at a Subway

So get this, today me, my dad, and my older brother head to subway to get some sandwhiches, my dad is paying.

I'm first in line, I get the chicken teriyaki wrap (good stuff), and when I get to the end the cashier (a girl, probably 17 or so) rings up my sandwhich and asks if i want anything else. I say "yeah, I'll get some chips too, and a water". I look down where the water cups are and there arent any on the holster all thats left is 20 oz cups, so i grab one of those.

So i get my water and come back and she's ringing up my brother's order. I notice that theres 3 pop's showing up on the register, wtf, i didnt order one, just my dad and brother did. So I open the lid and say to her "I didnt get a pop, you do know that this is water, right?"

And she goes, "yeah, but you are still paying for the cup". I said, "I'm sorry I thought you were out of water cups, the smallest size here is 20 oz" Then she says "our water cups are right over there" And points to the drink machine where the pop lids and straws are, and of course theres these tiny clear water cups that if a todler pissed in they'd probably fill it up.

I said, "sorry i did not realize those cups were there" (which i truly did not) and she basically shrugs at me like 'too bad'. and of course she probably wouldnt have given me a refund cuz there was water in there already.

Then thankfully my dad got a good idea (she hadnt processed the credit card yet) and said "wait, ill just use my sons pop cup, and then you can subtract my pop from the total.

And she says, 'okay'. and changes the total.

The part that pisses me off is that she didnt even tell us she was charging extra. I dont mind if thats there policy and they have charge $1.25 for a 20 oz cup thats filled with water, but they should at least put their drink cups in site, or make a sign or something to avoid confusion!!

Charging for the cup regardless of what you put in it is common. Bad service is common.

You should have ripped her thorax out with your fingers and used it as a cup.

Roflmao 😛

Your the one in the wrong. The cup is the only way they have for inventory. If you take a cup intended for soda then you will get charged for it even in you simply throw it away. You are not paying for the soda, you are paying for the cup. It has been this way for a very long time.

You should have gone to the subway I worked at all summer. I would've given you soda for free. I usually give people big cups for water anyway. Those small cups are crap. You want a large cup for water, I could care less.

Subway = overpriced, but it's so tasty 🙂

It's loss prevention. How should she know whether or not you're going to come back in ten minutes and fill up on pop? Although if the water glasses were smaller than 12oz then I think that that is a problem.

Agreed, many places will let employees get free drinks as long as they either bring their own cup or purchase one.

It has nothing to do with soda which is cheap as hell for restuarants. The fact is the cup is the inventory tool. It counts the soda sales. So if the register shows less soda sales than the count of cups then it looks like the employees are stealing or not doing their job correctly. It is really simple.

Most Subways I've been to are decent.

The one in the Union on campus is positively crap. Horrible customer service (I swear they went to the graveyard, worked voodoo, and had the zombies they resurrected work there), they charge you for everything (seriously they'd probably charge you for extra napkins), and is just generally terrible. I have been to maybe 2 other restaurants (including fast food places) that have been run as poorly as this one. Unfortunately due to its location and other factors its managed to be quite successful.

The one in the town I went to high school was bar none the best Subway I've ever been to. They charge less than other Subways do, have nice cheerful workers, and make the best sandwiches I've ever had in a fast food place. I don't think they even charge you for extra meat/cheese. They literally pile on the toppings, make sure that you get enough dressing (mayo, mustard, etc.), and have trully fresh ingredients (there's a grocery store right across the street that they go to if they run out, and I think they might've switched to using only them for some of the veggies since the ones Subway trucks in are usually terrible). With that, its no wonder that they have been nothing but successful. They rake in a ton of money, and when they used to do 2.99 tuesdays (2.99 for any footlong) they would literally be filled up for hours and have a line of about 50 people from 5 until about 9. This is in a town of about 2000 people.

So they don't mind people filling up water cups with soda 😕

Last time I went to a subway many moons ago was when the sandwich maker lady came down to make a sandwich for me all the while scratching above her elbow with her nails.
I don't remember if she put on gloves afterwards or not but she didn't wash her hands.

No Subway for me. Jared can get thin as a rake for all I care.

Soda isn't a part of the inventory...of course they mind, but there is no way to track it.

yeah, but at least i could have been told i was in the wrong! lol. I didnt realize there were water cups available, because there were none where the regular cups were!

at most subways ive been to, they give you a bigger cup if they are out of little ones (they dont wanna make other customers wait while they run to the backroom)

hm, guess from now on I'll ask.

But it still remains that she should have clarified that with me instead of just charging it and keeping her mouth shut. She knew my intention was just to get a water. and no one in their right mind orders a 'large water' for $1.25 when they can get a smaller cup and do free refills. She should have assumed that i didnt want to pay for the water.

the water glasses are probably about 8 oz.

You see, this is a matter of trust. you are right, in that she didnt know if i would come back for a 'free' pop refill. Its also a matter of inventory too (for some restaurants. but many places dont care if larger cups are given out, and many times employees drink out of the standard pop cups)

But when i say water and grab the smallest cup in front of me (which happened to be a bigger one), she either should trust me, or if she doesnt trust me (or if she needs to be struct on cup limitation policy), she should say 'you have to get a small cup or we will charge you' which she clearly didnt say!

You, sir, are correct. And if the cup count at the end of the night didn't match the till count, then the cashier would have been held responsible.
This is why I ALWAYS ask for a water cup if I don't see one readily available (I don't ever drink soda except for the occasional mixed drink).

As for the poor service, it's Subway. What else would one expect?
