I just recently purchased my Radeon 8500 (retail) and everything works fine, except the DVD playback. There seem to be some graphical glitches related to the Rage Theatre chip's Overlay control. For example, there was a problem with bright colors that resulted in artifacts that make brighter hues look like 16-bit color or something (this happened on BOTH this Radeon and an OEM Radeon I returned earlier due to a bad core resulting in 3D rendering artifacts, so I figured it's a driver problem). The funny thing was, I could eliminate the problem by changing the Gamma to "0", otherwise any setting above "1" will result in that glitch.
I downloaded that new driver yesterday (ATI's been releasing drivers pretty fast lately so that's a good thing to see) and that glitch was fixed. But now a new problem came up, this time in the darker hues. In darkers colors, such as shadow areas, again, the color looks like 16-bit. Colors simply don't blend into each other, resulting in blocky, fuzzy edges between, say, dark gray and black. It's NOT due to bad MPEG2 encoding of a certain DVD. It happens on all my titles and to double check, I used WinDVD to take a snapshot. When I open the BMP file screenshot, the problem with the colors don't exist. So it's gotta be the Overlay.
Now, my question:
1) Does anyone with a Radeon 8500 experience the same problem in DVD playback? DVD is very important to me so I just want to make sure it's not a problem with my hardware.
2) If so, is there a way around this? Can I disable the Rage Theatre chip somehow and just let the softDVD's signal pass through unaltered?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
