Bad DVD playback on Dell 2005 FPW w/ 6800GT

It's strange, if I play DVD's or dix files in full screen on my 2005 FPW, I get all sort of horizontal lines going through the picture as it's playing. If I reduce the window size so it is not maxed put, but just short of filling the entire screen then all looks good again. I can go full size in my 21" CRT and have no issues, anyone know a solution?

I tried searching for this problem and did not come up with a similar thread, so I apologize if this is somehow a repost. I could probably post pics, but as of right now I can't figure out a good way to take a screen shot of a DVD in playback.

Thanks!

if your using the driver available on Nv's website, 69.63? then thats the problem. try the 71.XX's linked in the driver thread above.

yah, I am using the current 66.93, that is the problem? I thought they were the latest supported drivers. I don't understand nVidia, everyone always complained about ATI drivers but in the last year I was getting annoyed because new drivers were out every month and I had to keep updating my 9600 pro. Now that I have had my 6800GT for 3 monthes, I am STILL using the same drivers as when I first got it, last update was Nov 9th.

I guess maybe they are releasing alot of beta drivers or whatever the 71.xx's are, but whats with the drought of official drivers? So far I think this might be my first and LAST nVidia card I buy...

If you get that frustrated with a piece of computer hardware, I suggest you buy a Xbox and be done with it.

Why, is that the choice you made? Was it worth it? Do you enjoy a 700+mhz cpu running linux?

I am just suprised at all the flak ATI got for bad drivers and infrequent releases when there drivers were never as buggy as the two I have used so far from nVidia. I have had a Radeon LE, Radeon 8500, Radeon 9600 pro, and now this 6800GT. I love the performance of the 6800GT but I am very annoyed with their drivers.

are you using hardware rendering or software rendering? either way its probably your drivers- i was having that problem as well

Umm... never looked at that, how would I check? Is that an option in powerDVD or in the drivers?

Actually ATi has been updating their drivers on a monthly basis lately. I really haven't run into a lot of major issues with them.

The 6800-series seems to be the most problematic of the nVidia cards right now when it comes to video playback, since it was the first of the 6-series cards to market. A lot of people feel you pain, especially the folks that bought the card based on nVidia's promises of what the onboard video processoe could do only to find out their card's video processor might be gimpy silicon compared to the video processor on the 6600/6200 cards.

Yeah, I am also experiencing those issues! Phew, I thought my files had gotten corrupt or something. 🙂 Yeah, it kinda sucks being a ginuea pig with new cards/hardware...

So, for the final verdict, which seems to be the least problematic nVIDIA drivers? The driver thread just has benchmarks, which doesn't include possibly video playback issues.

BTW, I also have a 6800 256MB PCIe. (Dell XPS Gen4)

I had this exact same issue, and upgrading to the 71.21 fixed it for me. (71.80 had strange DVI output issues and reported that my card was quite a bit hotter than usual, 71.25 had the "yellow water in HL2" issue).

now i must ask... to you and to anyone... because i have this problem and i have damn near stabbing my monitor with a pin to watch it bleed.... i just got the dell... and everything as nice... then all of the suddent that dvd playback issue started... and i also cant get anything other than windvd to play dvds... problem is that nvidias dvd decoder is noticeable better but i cant get dvds to play... first i got a nvauddec.ax error... so i deleted that file and now i dont get errors... and the programs say playing dvd but no picture shows up... directly following the removal of that file i had sound buyt no picture... now i have either... please help

Number 1: PLEASE learn some basic grammar, your use of commas is killing me when I try and read your post.

Number 2: Look at what others posted, I followed their advice and installed the 71.20 drivers, no problems at all now with DVD or Divx playback on my 2005fpw.

Number 3: Deleting random files is not usually a good thing, especially when those files have to do with drivers or video playback software. My advice: google "driver cleaner", use it to remove all old drivers, uninstall your DVD software, then reinstall new drivers (I reccomend 71.20), and finally, reinstall your DVD/Divx software.

If that does not work post back here with the results (in proper sentences please) and we will try to help. Thanks!

That would be going against what he said considering that he said he doesn't want to buy an NVIDIA graphics card again
