Bad checksum on boot - cause for concern?

Hi guys,

This morning on boot, I got a bad checksum, or something (unfortunately, I just hit F1 as fast as possible after POST to get to the CMOS). I don't know what happened, but my CMOS settings had been reset, so I had to put everything back the was it was. Any cause for alarm here?

Only thing I can think of is last night , I was installing and uninstalling a buncha shoot 'em ups I found on tucows and cnet. Oh, and I installed a buncha free software from this $5 webcam I got from Fry's: CAM-In Suite II, MGI PhotoSuite III SE, MGI Videowave III, Power video, and TeoVideo 2.0.3.

Doesn't sound like something I should worry about (unless it happens again), but then again, it's not normal either.

Your CMOS backup battery might be going bad. I buy CMOS batteries that are made in USA, Japan or Switzerland - NEVER buy button/coin batteries that are made in China (or unknown) for your PC, watch, etc., they are unreliable. If you have a Staples nearby, they have Duracell for about the best price you're likely to find in your area (around $2.00).
. I replace mine when the voltage drops to 2.9 or below under load (PC off, AC power disconnected). A fresh one should read about 3.2V under load. It's good to have an inexpensive meter around to help keep your PC humming 😉 .
. Oh, and it never hurts to check for viruses/trojans/worms JIC...

It's probably not the battery. It is a known problem with the K7S5A that many, many people are experiencing. No real fix for it yet.

thanks for the suggestion guys.

I'll try the battery and consider the flashing the bios
I've considered flashing, but it seems risky (especially if you're a newbie) from the warnings I've read. Does flashing mean the same as a firmware update? I wanted to update the firmware on my Dell Truemobile WLAN card, but that seems risky too.

Replacing the battery and flashing the BIOS did not fix the problem on 2 of the 3 machines I tried it on. Guess you got lucky.
