Bad cdrw drive or something else?

I just put together a new machine, P4C 3.0, Asus P4C800-E, 1GB Corsair Twinx1024-3200LL. From my old machine, I brought over my DVD drive (Pioneer 16x ) and burner Plextor 16/10/40. The DVD is master and the CDRW slave on the secondary IDE channel. There is a new cable on the new machine.

On the old machine during its last few weeks, I started having problems with INCD reading cdrws that I had created on the machine earlier and also writing new ones.

Now on the new machine, I have started having problems where sometimes when I boot up, the CDRW drive is not there. The bios sees it without an apparant problem. If I reboot the machine, sometimes the drive appears again in Windows. Also, if I go to add remove hardware, I can add it back in. It has the drive on a list of devices and once I choose it, the drive is back.

But now also, I have had two occasions where there have been read problems with the drive. Once I was copying a file over from a cdr I had burned on the old machine and it couldn't copy the entire file. I was able to read it on the DVD no problem. The second problem was it was giving me read errors when trying to install a game which had worked on the old machine.

Does this sound like the cdrw is slowly failing? I have not tried switching cables on the new machine yet. I am using a 40 wire ribbon cable now. Do you think using an 80 wire cable would help or make any difference for this?
