Bad car luck as of late

So, two months ago my Mercury was broken into by thieves who stole my after market stereo system. I had the pass phrase on it, so it locks itself out once the power is disconnected, but that is probably bypassable if one knows what they are doing. Gave the serial numbers to the police, but I know I will never see it again, they were nice enough to dust for prints, but the thieves wore gloves.

Thankfully, I have comprehensive insurance, so I am only out of deductibles and time to deal with this crap. The fact that a $400 stereo was stolen was not as bad as the $3000 worth of damage they did to my car to get to it (without my alarm going off). The $3000 was the result of two broken windows, a failed slim jimming that damaged the door and the fact they ripped my entire climate control system out to get to my stereo. Oddly enough, they disconnected my ipod module ($50+ used on Ebay) from the stereo and left it in my car, along with my Sennheiser headphones (~ $50 MSRP) and DvD navigation software ($40+ on Ebay) which were all there and untouched. They did find and take my hidden $5 stash of emergency gas cash.

Since Ford does not have any parts for cars that are 8+ years old, according to the service center, they kept it for about 2 months while they searched for the parts required to fix it. But, right as they found the needed parts, a hailstorm passed through town and finished the job as golfball to softball sized hail rained from the sky. At that point, the insurance company totaled it.

So, I think it finished and returned my rental car provided to me by my insurance company (that was also heavily damaged during the hailstorm). I then purchased a brand new Honda and washed my hands of the entire affair, grateful the ordeal was over.

The other night, my 1 week old Honda was rear ended as I was waiting at a traffic light. The accident destroyed the front of the truck that hit me, with fluids from his vehicle leaking everywhere and the wheels grinding against its warped molding. My Honda's rear is tore up, but still drivable and the trunk still opens.

The other driver, of course, was uninsured (violation of my state's requirement that one must purchase liability insurance (at least)) and he did not have a driver's license (literally none, not even an expired one). Thankfully, he stuck around for the cops and spilled his guts to the policeman that took the accident report about how he had not slept for two days, that his tires were bald, that he knew his brakes were not good, etc. So, it is clear that I am not at fault and I am glad no one was hurt. On a freaky coincidental note, I received the new insurance card for my new car the day the accident occurred.

Body shops around here are booked till late August due to the hailstorm, but at least I can drive it and not have to deal with rentals till it goes in for repairs. Sigh, always buy comprehensive insurance, it really pays off sometimes.

Cliffs:
1. Thieves destroyed my car to steal my stereo
2. Hail storm finished my old car off (resulting in a total)
3. Hail storm severely damaged my rental car (a new 2011 Impala)
4. My new car (2011 Honda Accord), purchased to end the drama, was rear-ended by an uninsured, unlicensed motorist < a week after purchase
5. Always buy comprehensive insurance and do not expect other drivers to have liability insurance

Sheesh, sorry to hear about all that.

Years ago, I had a car with hard-to-find t-tops. Thieves busted out both getting to my stereo. Then it rained.

Like, really guys? Couldn't you have just busted a window instead, like any normal, decent thief?

I will NEVER have a car that does not have full coverage on it again. I learned my lesson about 10 years ago. My wife (girlfriend at the time) had her car stolen from my front yard, then the thief set fire to it to try and destroy the evidence. We had dropped full coverage on the car about 3-4 months before it was stolen, so we were screwed.

I like the emergency $5 fund idea. While it will only buy you a gallon of gas, all I carry are CC's usually which will buy me nothing if for some reason the gas station doesn't take them (maybe cc's are down).

I don't have full coverage, but only because a year's worth is probably more than the cost of my car. ;)

That is a terrible run of luck.
Where do you hide your emergency gas stash that they'd spend the time to look for it?

Wow - thats pretty bad. Just remember that it could be worse though - at least the Honda is still driveable and the guy stuck around

Man, talk about bad luck...
It sucks the amount of uninsured and unlicensed drivers.... add to that the number that really aren't road worthy...

Hopefully that dude's car is impounded and sold at auction and then any proceeds go to you.... but my guess is that it's probably not worth the cost to tow it...

Found a body shop outside of town that worked me in, the insurance company has issued the check. But...

It hailed again yesterday during a severe thunderstorm that rolled through, marble size this time and my car was in the middle of it. The weather has not cleared up enough for me to fully inspect it, but it looks like I got lucky.

The weather this year is crazy.

How does hail total a car?

Cosmetic should not = function

A car being totaled has nothing to do with its functionality, it has to do with the cost to repair it. The damage of the hail on top of the damage from the thieves was enough to make the repair costs higher than the insurance company was willing to pay for that car. I'm sure the car still ran and it's possible somebody will end up driving it as a beater, but the amount of work to return it to it's undamaged condition just wasn't worth paying for.

Now, to add insult to injury, your insurance company will probably jack your rates...(fuckers)

The body shop in my last post fixed my Honda up like new. :)

But, the moving company that placed my car on a truck and hauled it to Boston (new job) managed to inflict many scratches and dents. Just finished the paperwork and mailed it, so hopefully they will pay to have it repaired (they said they would).

With this luck, it is going to be very fun once the first hard freeze hits.

Remember that vehicles driven in Alabama do not have heaters that actually work in the cold. :hmm:

Something to do with the Mason Dixen line

This was an interesting story. Since the value of the new car has depreciated after the accident(s) you may be stuck with it for a while because that really the lowers resale value when it shows up on Carfax.

Nevertheless, considering your run of luck there is probably no sense in worrying about resale. ;)

Darn OP, are you sure you did not do anything bad lately? heheheh.

I feel for you. Some moron hit my vehicle and smashed the front door and fender and left the scene of the accident. Even with comprehension insurance, it still cost me about $500 out of my pocket ($250 deductible and $250 for rental). Fucker.

About the morons that are driving around without any insurance, you are not alone. It is estimating that about 25% of drivers in the Southern states (even higher in urban areas/cities) have no insurance or license or expired tags/licenses/etc.

Now, to add insult to injury, your insurance company will probably jack your rates...(fuckers)

I thought they would jack up the premium only if it was your fault? (51% or higher). My rate is the same even with the smash mentioned above ( cost them over $2K) and a window was smash in daytime and the thief took my Alpine CD player (several hundreds bucks to replace the window and the CD player).

Well, the shop fixed my car up perfectly and the movers paid for the rental / repairs like they said, but...

I returned from a week long business trip and it looks like someone backed into my car in the parking lot while I was gone and scratched, dented and cracked my rear bumper. No cameras in the parking lot, no idea who is responsible other than the white paint now on my black car.

Sigh... here we go again!

Why is it that the police in the US does not do regular checks on license plates and driving licenses and driving without insurance ? That would be easy money for the state, i would think ? These people have a responsibility just as other people to not be a safety hazard on the road (I know that there are enough people on the roads driving who cannot drive but carry licenses and insurance...).

Is it really that bad ?

 • To much illegal drivers...
 • Pot holes and cracks in roads...
 • Bankrupt states...
 • Add more US problems here...
 • And here...
