Bad cables on the computer case?

So, I got some parts in from newegg a few weeks ago. I started to built the system last week and the computer wouldn't turn on. I made sure that everything sat in correctly. Still, it wouldn't turn on. I was thinking it was either a bad psu, mobo, or the power switch cable on the case. I switched mobos and I see the little red light indicator on the mobo on. The computer won't still turn on. I think that the psu should have enough juice since, I have the antec 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX 12V V2.0. The psu that comes with the sonata case. Is it the power switch cable that's bad? I can't think of anything else. Is there anyway I can fix it since I don't want to return the case to newegg.
or is it still possible that the psu still took a $hit? Since, some people have the same psu fail on them even though the light on the mobo comes on?

Here's the hardware that I'm using:

2 sata maxtor 250 7200 rpm 16mb cache gig hard drives.
Abit mobo.
Amd x2 4400 socket am2
Ati x1600 pci x16 Videocard
dvd burner
2 gigs of ram

It's getting late on Saturday but get on over to your nearest Sears (you might want to call ahead and see if they have in stock as you don't want to go unless they do - but then again you may not get the straight scoop and if you are standing in their face tapping your toe, they may fix you up with a deal even if they don't have it) and get the Digital Multimeter kit that's on sale this week ($15. normally $25.). See the thread in the Hot Deals section - I'll go and bump it to the top. You can use that to test your front panel switches/wires, your PSU voltages etc. Sale is good until store closing today. And don't forget to pick up a good (Energizer, Duracell, Panasonic) alkaline 9V battery while you're out to the store if you don't already have a known-good one.
. And when you get back, take a close look around inside that PSU with a flashlight. If you fear to remove the cover, just peer through the vent slots. You are looking for swollen, leaking, blown caps (capacitors ). Go to http://www.badcaps.com for pix so you'll know how they look. Some Antec PSU models have lately been known for having bad caps (generall two to three years old, but some newer can have them too). If there are bad caps, Antec should replace even if out of warranty.

Its hard to diagnose from afar.
The inexpensive PSU has my red flag flashing.
It could be nothing but try to do a basic setup outside of case with basics.
mobo, cpu (reseat your CPU), memory too, and connect to PSU. See if you got any movement. You should get a beep.
If not, try another PSU.

Thanks for the replies. Once, I get out of work and go home. There's a sears about 2 mins away from my house. I'll pass by and pick one up if they have them in stock. I will give you an update tomorrow.

Allright, update I did the test and nothing bad on the test cameout everything normal. It wouldn't turn on so I switched the psu nothing, and I tried a new case and the computer won't turn on. I'm out of ideas, i reseated the cpu, ram, memory card. It can't be the mobo because I was having the same problem with the last mobo and I bought a new one. no beeps or nothing.

Even if all of the outputs tested normal on the PS, I would still tend to suspect it. I have the 500 watt version of the same flavor, and I have noticed that it frequently will not power up with just a flick of a switch. I sometimes have to cycle both of the power switches, on the front and the back, and even then have to be patient for if to come on after some seconds. I think that it has something to do with the overvoltage protection.

Just power the motherboard first ...then add 1 component at a time ...as soon as it doesn't boot...you have figured out the faulty device.
Or i guess you need to have memory, cpu in also. not so good a test if its not something like the video card. That was my problem.

does your motherboard have L.E.D. error codes?

Just plug in the jumper cables from the power button and power it up. My power button unscrews from the case. I hope yours does too so it will reach.

if it's not posting than you have a hardware problem

you should try running minimum hardware to troubleshoot the problem.

to boot the pc without it being in the case you can take your power button from your case like boyo said or you should always short it with a screw driver or something.

I removed the case and got the jumper cable and try turning it on with the power button. nothing but when I remove the cmos jumper it turns on for about a second or so before it loses power again.

that's because it's not posting you need to troubleshoot the problem most likely a hardware problem.

run minimum hardware like I said before your doing this to try to find out what the problem is lets say one of the ram sticks is bad you take it out and it posts than you know it was the memory so you need to get it RMA'd

update: allright, I put on a different power supply and moved the cmos jumper on another pin and pressed the button and walah the computer posts but, now i'm getting a constant beep. and a constant siren goes off. well, i know that the cpu, and ram, are working because it posts. I'm also assuming so is the videocard because I see well the post.

ok, this is so fricken wierd. I'm using the psu and the mobo that i bought first and I was having these problems. Then. i try it later it works perfectly. I'm formatting windows on a open case and just connected the harddrive, and dvd rom. :) I don't know what the hell is going on. Doesn't matter it's working now.
