Was helping my bro put together a tbird 800 for his g/f the other day.
First pass was using an A7V with 128M Crucial PC133, powerman 250W PS,
Rage IIC agp and an mx300. Using Win98SE and all appropriate and
possible patches and BIOS settings, there was a terrible audio
crackling/popping problem -- when playing MP3's with winamp or sonique.
Tried with an SB Live and an SB PCI64, same stuff. Tried reformatting
with WinME. Same stuff. Tried a new 300W PC, pulled all other cards,
disabled L1/L2 cache, used another DIMM -- no dice. Figuring it was a
bum A7V, pulled it and rebuilt with a DFI AK74-SC. Same crap with all
three sound cards *and* the AC97 onboard!
Just for the hell of it, threw in a Duron 650, and that did it. So
it seems to be a defective Athlon, but -- what kind of defect, and why is
the system stable in every other regard? Can play Windows sound effects,
DirectSound games (including some CPU-intensive Mame stuff) without a
hitch. Seems to be strictly an MP3 issue. One of the oddest things
I've ever seen. Any ideas?
