The circuit breaker tripped in my basement for some reason, and my freezer defroze. I had some tobacco in bags, and the stink got into them a bit. I got it all out, and transferred it to new bags, but I wonder if the dangerous funk made it into them. Any ideas?

There is always bacteria in everything. The cold or freezing just slows or stops it. As soon as it warms up again it will start multiplying again. Now whether is grew enough to be harmful in that amount of time is the question.

Well, my concern isn't so much the random, and relatively stable bacteria in pasteurized tobacco as the rotten turkey, and who knows what else was in the freezer. The whole point may be moot anyway. If the stink(flavor?) made it to the tobacco, I'll have to ditch it all :^/

the cigarrete tastes like roadkill

ziplocs arent 100% impermeable. the weak spots are at the seams and at the ziploc area itself.

I think odor molecules are more easily transferred then water??

Id say its probably safe, but i can bet they have a nice stank to them.

molecules making up an odor are 1 zillionth the size of a bacteria. unless there's a hole big enough for water to pass thru, i'd call it good.

I''d be more concerned on why the breaker tripped. Could be the freezer.

I think it was too much stuff on the circuit. I had a dehumidifier, the freezer, and a sump pump on. After a period of rain, I think the sump pump is what shut it all down.

I'll try the worst looking can tonight. It was all snus, so it had a lot of moisture in it. It would evaporate from the cans, and form ice inside the the bags. Not a huge deal when everything was frozen. I'd thaw a tin, then top up the water as necessary. Some of the bags got *very* wet inside, and one of the tins pretty much came apart. I put it in a new tin, and stuck it in the fridge. If that made it through ok, the rest should be fine.

I have about 30% in paperboard tins, and the rest in plastic. I have some I'm just gonna toss. It was made by a very small maker, and they used the older method of fermenting the tobacco instead of pasteurization. With fermented tobacco, TSNAs can get out of hand when stored at room temperature.
