When I booted this morning my mouse was all herky jerky. Then I found something SECRETLY wanting to download a program.

After about 30 minutes of fooling around I found out that it was something called Lite Installer. Later I discovered that it was BackWeb Lite Installer. It was running out of my Temp folder, and it had set itself up in my StartUp folder. I deleted it and rebooted. Chit, there it was again. Then I tracked it down in the registry and found that it was an .exe file in a folder named WDSTW. Files involved were dlgchbw.exe and dlgli1.exe.

Anyway, I killed it in the Registry and that put an end to it. However, I just learned from an old AT post that it may be part of Western Digital's hdd diagnostics. I haven't knowingly run a wdc diagnostic for at least 6 months. So now I'm wondering if my wdc hdd activated this utility, and if so, why. I'd also like to know why wdc and/or BackWeb think they own my pc, but that's another issue for another time.

Oh, then I found out that Lite Installer was trying to communicate with 129.253.170.220 -- which is Microsoft

Anyone have some knowledge on this?
