Backwards MP3 Playback

Does anyone out there know of a program that will let me play an mp3 (or any audio format) backwards? I know this sounds stupid but my friend said that if you listen to Queen's "Another one Bites the Dust" backwards, there are hidden messages. I was bored and thought I would try it. I tried google but no dice. Thanks for any help.

i did that for a choking victim song once...

however it was kind of a backasswards way of doing it...encoding mp3 into wav with winamp...reversed it with Sound Recorder (does Windows even have this tool anymore) saved it, and then reencode to mp3 :)

The WAV recorder built into older versions of Windows could play WAV files backwards. I'm not sure if current versions of Windows have it though. All you'd need to do is convert the MP3 to WAV and then use that program to play it back if it's still in Windows.

EDIT: "Sound Recorder" is still there in XP Pro.

that's a bad idea. 99% of the time, if you decode an mp3, the orignal stays the same. No need to re-encode the file.

he'd be encoding the WAV to MP3 to reduce the file size...not sure why you think this is a poor idea

Because he isn't building a library of these songs, I am sure he can spare 30 megs for the five minutes that it takes to listen to the song, and reencoding will a) take his time b) lower the quality of the file, so he might miss some of the stuff he's looking for.

Either way, it has to be converted to a WAV(or some other lossless format) to be reversed. MP3s have to be decoded in forward order, since the next chunk of data is based off the previous chunk; so it needs to go to WAV format, which can then be literally played backwards by reversing the sound wave, and then it can be recompressed to get the reversed MP3.

To find the old windows sound recorder:

Run -> sndrec32

in NT/XP it's in the system32 folder in the windows directory

Now go play wavs in reverse to your heart's desire.

You could do the same thing with CoolEdit, IIRC.
