I have recently lost some important files due to a backup disk gone bad. It was a second disk in my computer.............DUMB.............and it went south on me

I have 2 questions I need some advice on..............

1.) What I intend to do is this.....................backup all my important files to an external hard drive and choose a time to burn all these files from the external drive to DVD media (say......once a month) ?

2.) was going to purchase a Maxtor One Touch external hard drive but have read MANY poor reviews on these drives............what would you recommend I get for an external drive?

Thanks for any advice and opinions....................I really want to do this the correct way this time !

Well, the WD My Book drives look decent. Or you could just grab a $200, 500GB Seagate drive off of TD and buy a external enclosure and do it that way (make sure it supports SATA).

what kind of backup software did you use? i think that the best one is true image, plus buy a good and very reliable HD, if you want external one look at seagate or hitachi, they are very good, in other cases i prefer samsung coz they are very quite and i never had any probs with them.

Here's another vote for True Image. It's saved my buns more than once. I also hear good things about Nortons Ghost.

yeah i agree with you, but this good thing were said about earlier versions of this prog, the last one is not so good as it can be.

Are you looking to store files, or image your hard drive? If you plan on imaging it, Norton Ghost or True Image are highly recommended. If you plan on backup up files, but not imaging the operating system, then I would suggest a syncing program like Folder Match. You run it, and it syncs one folder to another, thus easy backup.

A great free utility would be "Robocopy" from Microsoft. I have used it for years to backup from 1 PC to another.
