I'm looking for a way to basically have a removable device (probably a USB hard drive) to be connected to a file server or NAS-type device that continually copies all or specified files and folders to the device.

The person wants to be able to take work home with them, but it's generally a pain for them to go search out certain specific files, copy them to a removable device (they currently use a USB memory key), take them home, then remember to copy the altered files to the proper locations when they get back the next day.

So the ideal situation would be that everything in their data directory is synchronized to a larger-capacity removable device so that, at any point during the day, they can just unplug the device and take it with them, then plug it into their laptop or home computer and have at their data.

I know that that's probably fairly easy to do, but I don't have a tested solution that I can recommend, so that's why I'm posting this.

The other part of the whole thing, though, is that ideally they'd like to basically be able to just plug the thing back in when they start their morning and have it automatically update any files on the file server that were changed. If they need to push a button or go through a click or two, so be it, but the simpler the better.

The absolute perfect solution would be to have the server make a copy of any files that are about to be over-written when the device is re-introduced to the network in the morning, so that in case someone worked late past when the device was removed or something like that, that they could choose what updated file they wanted to use. Hopefully that explanation came out clearly...

Anyway, I'm open to about any solution - NAS device, file server running Windows or Linux, using custom scripts, etc. Just as long as it's reliable and gets the job done.

BTW, normally I'd just set them up to VPN in from home, but they're on dial-up and have to pull larger (2 meg+) Excel files, as well as work with Quickbooks company files, so that's not really an option. Even if speed wasn't an issue, they lose their connection constantly. So I'm looking for the most convienent way for this person to get work done away from the office.

Thanks for any ideas/solutions.
