Backup strategy for large volume?

I am trying to think of a decent backup strategy.

1. Create a separate application and data partition.
2. Backup application and data partition separately.
3. Have laptop backup files to the desktop machine.
4. Have a backup medium to backup the desktop machine.

Ideally, there should be a media that I can use to backup the drives unattended. However, the disk storage market has greatly outstripped the capability of backup medium. If I want to backup a 300Gb drive, I would have to buy an really expensive tape drive.

I have been backing up to an external hard disk. However, hard disks are prone to mechanical failure and is useful for off-site backup (unless you buy several hd).

Dual-density DVD rates at about 8Gb per disk. Even at that high capability, it would take a long time to backup a 300 Gb drive. I was wondering if anyone have any good suggestions.

Use a second hard disk in a mobile rack, or usb/firewire external enclosure. It's about the only practical way any more.
