I've got a customer that needs a tape drive but can't pay the price for Backup Exec.

I've used windows backup before but for doing daily rotation it seems to not work so well overwriting the old tapes on a daily basis. Anyone have experience using windows backup with a 5 tape schedule and have it work succesfully?

What I'm looking for is software that will work like Backup Exec but at a fraction of the cost. Anything out there like this?

Thanks,

You might try searching for Stomp Backup MyPC. We use it at work, and it's nearly identical to Backup Exec. I am not sure about the pricing, though.

It is identical to Veritas Backup Exec Desktop Edition. Stomp Backup MyPC = Veritas Backup MyPC (formerly called Backup Exec Desktop Edition).

Don't know what tape drive he has but Backup Exec Desktop Edition doesn't support SCSI tape drives so the Stomp program may not as well if they are the same.

Yeah, Backup Exec has always supported SCSI tape drives. There must have been something amiss with your configuration, needed a patch or something. I have the device support list for Backup Exec Desktop Edition 4.2.1 and it supports a number of SCSI tape devices, but its fairly limited to SCSI drives that were relatively mainstream and aimed at local desktop or small network backups, not the expensive enterprise level SCSI backup systems. Backup Exec Server products add support for everything SCSI.

Well, it doesn't support DLT drives. I guess I just assumed it didn't support any SCSI drives.

Ah, ok. To get DLT support you need at least version 8.5 or higher of Backup Exec and NetBackup Exec for servers and networks. The Desktop Edition including Backup MyPC won't do those.
