Backup software, images rarely, docs regularly

I just read some of the other threads on backup software, and my boat failed to float.

I want some kind of disc image software that will boot from a CD and put an image of the hard drive on a networked server.

Something that will scan my hard drive for documents I have changed, quicken files, email, text, but not downloaded mp3 etc. files and save them to a folder on a networked server.

Being free for use on my home network would be a nice feature too. Systems are all 98 or xp, and I have a few versions of Ghost, but it want to be installed to run, too pesky, and I find I am MUCH happier with a Norton free system.

Not sure about your purpose of using a boot from CD image to do this but if you just want to make copies of your files from your desktop to a networked drive all you should need is some file sync software.

This is the one I use (the freeware version should be sufficient for your needs)

With a bootable CD or DVD that makes a full image restore a LOT easier. If your system goes fubar, first try the normal fix it things, but if you are faced with a format and reinstall situation, its very nice to be able to restore an image instead of fussing with XP and service packs (and yes I do have a slipstreamed XP, but even so its hours of time).

I didn't see any freeware version, just a 30 day demo and shareware of about $25 I think.

NovaStor NovaBackup is about $40 to download.

I am still very much in the looking mode, but may just ghost an image for now.

I went to a computer swapmeet today (bleh), then stopped at Frys on the way home and bought SystemWorks 2006 Premier, which I was assured included Ghost 10.0, but in that odd Frys sale and rebate way was free after 2x rebates instead of $20 after same with just Ghost. Right now I am looking to see if I can use the Ghost without installing the other junk.

Foo, seems like no easy way to use Ghost off the SystemWorks CD without doing a complete install, which I don't want.

Currently running the XP builtin backup program.

mikeford,
Scroll down on the Syncback download page and you should see the download for the freeware version

Look for this on the page...
SyncBack Freeware V3.2.12 includes help file [ validate download ]

I was looking for a ghost replacement after a similar loss of my taste for Norton (I got sick of it not working with my external hard drive which is my only real backup solution)

Check out Acronis True Image, it does what I think you're asking for, and you can get a fully functional 15 day trial.
