How do I plan for the future?
I currently have about 18 gigs of invaluable digital pictures, 200 GB of video files in AVI format waiting to be converted to mpeg2. All of this is of my family, mostly of my 2 lil kids. The amount of data is growing all the time, at a current average rate of 4 GB/month.
I don't want to lose a single picture/video, at least not for the next 100 years. Guaranteed.
I do have a haphazard 'incremental' sytem of backing up pics & video onto DVD+Rs. I know it's said they're good for another 100 years, but who knows? I hear rather often that 2 year old discs are no longer readable and this is what set me thinking.
I use Ritek media and burn on a Plextor 708A at 8x. I also keep the video on the original miniDV tape as well, for now anyway. They're piling up - but I can't do that with my compact flash cards though 😀. This is the one downside of the megapixel revolution on the digital photography front and now I want more - 2 MB 5 MP pictures aren't good enough anymore.
The question is, what are my options? RAID5? Tape? DVD? Blu-Ray? Just looking for opinions, ideas and thoughts.
