Question Backup PC. i5 7600 or 7600K? Ideally I want to pick one of these up for $30-$40 on Ebay

I inherited a PC I built in 2017. It has a Pentium G4560 (dual core with hyperthreading). I am not a big fan of Intel used CPU's, mostly because they command a higher price than what they are worth. The other problem is the K series chips may be toast if they were delidded or improperly OC'd for a long time.

The 7600 is a 65w part while the 7600k is a 91w part with upside OCing. I know it doesn't make much sense 6 years later.

The other question is will the Kaby Lake series CPU's and motherboards run DDR4 3600mhz? I have plenty of extra ram. I think the memory in the computer is DDR4 3000mhz.

7th gen could do both DDR3/DDR4 but Intel dissuaded people by saying DDR3 could damage the IMC.

From 8th gen, it was DDR4 only.

5 GHz is pretty good. Should come in handy to prolong the life of this CPU a bit in the future (you know, when you feel like you wanna throw it away but then you think, ah heck! Let's run it at 5 GHz and see how long it lasts).

The other problem is the K series chips may be toast if they were delidded or improperly OC'd for a long time.

If someone sold me a delided cpu and i did not know that person, its a very hard pass.
Because liquid metal can wreck the cpu if its not delided properly and then coated with clear nail polish or some form of silicon conformal coating.

If its mint and has not been delided, well, then i am all for deliding that puppy, and liquid metaling it, but you probably don't have the tools or the liquid metal on hand to do it.

But the 7000 series intel were solid cpu's.
I don't think you can get any Ryzen's for 30-40 dollars.
Only problem as others said, is they took both DDR3 and DDR4 ram.
So your going to need to see what board you got with that G4560.

But seeing how its a G4560 i am guessing it will probably be DDR3, as DDR4 was mostly on premium stuff back in those days.

I built a couple of these systems. One was a G4560 and the other a rare G4620 CPU. They both have DDR4 in them. I think they both have 16GB of ram. One is DDR4 3000 and the other is DDR4 2400mhz. One has a NVMe drive in it.

I would not bet on 3600, but I can't give you a clear cut answer either. My 6600K does not like 3000+, granted with minimum effort on my part as I was just curious. On the other hand, my 8700 non-K ran 4266 for a short while and 4000 for a year or so. Jumps between gens were significant.

I think you can be cautiously optimistic about 3200+, which is good enough anyway.

Only if you used high voltage (>1.5V) DDR3. Ideally, Intel wanted you to use DDR3L (1.35V), but I haven't heard of anyone having problems with the standard stuff.

I have a 7600K coming in the mail. I got it for under $45. I plan to break performance records with it. I guess my NZXT S340 case will fit a 280mm AIO. I went into my toy shop in the garage and found a new Cooler Master 280mm AIO. Records will fall because I have some good memory. I am bringing out my old B-Die kit. I have options.
