Backup of Windows workgroup user accounts

Hi guys, have a question and was hoping someone here knows the answer. Been not very successful on google so far...

At our company we have a number of servers that have a few hundred windows user accounts on them (Win 2000 Advanced Server mostly). Now if a server was to die we'd be in a pretty bad shape in terms of trying to restore the accounts even though we keep good backups of all the files and things like that.

What I wanted to know is, does anyone know of a good way that we can automatically (on a schedule) back up all of the user accounts? For example, I have no idea if this would work or not, but what if we backed-up the sam file, would that work if it is restored on a new system? Or is there a lot more to it?

Please help me out. Thanks 🙂

Oh, and if no such thing is possible by default, then I do not mind writing my own soft to do it, just if you point me to the right direction.

If you're using Active Directory the user accounts should be replicated among your various member servers. In any case, no you can't just backup individual files to backup user accounts. The easiest thing to do would be to use the Microsoft Backup utility to do a full backup of the server. You can schedule the backups however you'd like and can have the images stored anywhere you'd like.
