Backup my navigation DVD?

Hello,

I have a honda navigation 4.31 dvd and noticed on their website it costs $185 for a replacement. I don't want to get a scratch or something that will render it useless. Is it difficult to back it up? Do they have macrovision or something like that? Thanks

I hear it's nearly impossible, they use some special burning technique that isn't mainstream. I'll look into it more.

AFAIK, no one has been able to do it on the Honda/Acura DVD's. You can make a copy just fine but it won't work. I was working on it with a bunch of people a few years ago and gave up.

You are inferring that he is up to no good, which is not how his op reads. If he does have another Honda then it already has a nav system.
Not likely he would buy a factory nav system seperately as they are costly. And if his other car, say another Honda had the nav, it would already have the nav dvd. He is only looking to make a backup so the disc does not get ruined.

I still suggest he try the trial version of CloneCD as it can copy just about any protected disc and they will work 99% of the time.

If one had an older Nav disc in their Honda and didn't want to pay for the update, one might want to copy someone else's newer disc...

Which is why Navteq is coding the discs to the vehicle's VIN...

However...

Lighten up Francis! I was joking about the OP.

I think Honda has gotten away from DVD disc nav. The nav in my TL is hard drive based. I think you need a dvd to upgrade it, but you may have to have it upgraded at the dealer. My dealer wasn't sure, so take this with a grain of salt.

As for the OP, I've burned disc in my older TL, and in my gf's Honda minivan. The disc are color coded, so I don't know if the same for all of them. What car do you have?

I have a 2006 honda accord. To clear up a few things

1. Yes, I am making a backup so that in case my disc gets messed up or stolen, I have another copy.
2. The nav system runs off a dvd which makes me worried if I hit a big bump it may get messed up while seeking the disc.

I will try cloneCD and see if it works. Thanks

It's not going to get messed up going over any bumps, though. It's not like the read head is touching the DVD. If you hit a bump big enough to cause the read head to touch the disc, you won't be worried about your nav system...

It's a good idea to have a backup, but that's not a valid reason, imo.

My guess is that Honda might replace that disc for you if it got messed up. As long as you could show them that your original DVD does not work properly.

I don't think you need to worry. I drove a 2005 RL w/DVD based NAV for 4 years over some of the worst roads in the NE US and never had any problem.

I agree with the last two guys. I'm sure if you had an issue, it would be covered by Honda. The disk can also update the firmware to the nav itself, as I found out when I put the 2008 disk in the minivan. I'm not sure what would happen if you put the wrong color disk in, so make sure it's the right one. I used CDBurnerXP to copy the disk for the van, and the DVD was DL, not the standard DVD.

what year TL? i have an 07 (04-08 are nearly identical) and it is DVD based (it's in the trunk of the car)

OP, i highly doubt anthing will happen to your disc. Worst case, you can buy new ones on ebay for ~100 bucks too.

I have a 09 TL now, and the nav is now hard drive based. I had a 04 Tl before the 09, and the Dvd for it was orange. The disc in your Tl is a different color, because the units are not the same.

I sold my '04 TL a couple years ago but last I knew they were easy to burn copies but no one had them working. Now I'm curious how they did it...off to google..
