backup MBR

What OS are you running?

If you are running Win9x you can simply boot off a boot disk and issue the command fdisk /mbr and it will restore a working MBR.
 
For Win9X thru ME, you can repair a broken MBR with FDISK /MBR, . . . however that was not your question. To create and retain a backup of your MBR, use Norton Utilities and let it create the RESCUE set of floppies. That will have a copy of your MBR on it.
