Backup hard drive power switch and backup software

I was thinking about taking an old 10GB or 20GB hard drive to set up as a backup to be able to save and quickly replace my OS, programs and important files very quickly. I imagine that after I set this up I will not have to use it all that frequently. Maybe every 2 weeks or so to back up some files. Because of this infrequent use I thought it would be wasteful to have this drive run constantly just using up power, generating heat and noise and shortening its life span. I would like to be able to turn it on and restart my computer when I want to use it. I dont want to have to open the computer up to do it every time though. I would like to install a switch to be able to turn it on and off. I believe the HD draws from both the 5v and 12v line so it isnt quite as easy as a fan switch because these would both need to be disconnected. What kind of switch would I need to do this?

Also, what kind of software is available to quickly restore a copy of Windows XP or 2000, some programs and files? I would prefer something free if it is available. I see a lot of people mention Norton ghost, what would be involved in using that?

Thanks,
Brian

Been doing that for several years now. The easiest way I know of the have a drive with a power switch is to install it in a mobile rack. They have their own power switch. I put BOTH drives in mobile racks and switch them on and off as needed.

A more elegant solution can be found at Romtec USA and their Trios II interface. That is what I am using now.

It doesn't get much cheaper, and safer than wiring your own switch, than a $14-$15 for a mobile rack. Get one with a off/on slide switch.

I have my drives set to spin down when not in use, I use Win 98 but I would think Win XP would have the same feature. My 2 backup drives just hang out when not in use.
