I don't remember encrypting anything on my hard drive however Vista is not telling me that i need to back up the key used for encryption on my drive. i backed it up just in case but know i want to know what is encrypted. can i see a list of all the files that are on my drive that are encrypted somehow? or is there any other way to know? any help is appreciated.

I think EFSInfo has the ability to recurse through a directory tree and tell you what's encrypted. Cipher.exe is built into the OS, but I don't think you can recurse directories with it.

EFSInfo is a free download on Microsoft.com

Awesome info Stash! I am far from a big fan of Vista, but I have a lot of respect for the efforts that you put forth here to aid in knowledge and solutions. Cheers

Tip - Explorer will also mark encrypted files in Green. And if you have encryption, backup the backup key. Losing the key is unrecoverable. You will need the key if you have to create a new account or reset the password in some cases.
