currently i have a ms exchange server for testing/learning purposes. if for some reason my internet goes out of service, is there a way i can route the incoming emails to a different email server? eg. yahoo, hotmail

here's a screencap of the mx record setup page. i'm not sure how to go about setting up the primary email server to my domain and the secondary email server to a specific yahoo email address.
 
I doubt you can find a reliable free email server host. You can run your own secondary email server and play with the MX records to make it use the 2nd one in case the first one goes down.

I would agree with this. What you are trying do isn't necessarily too difficult but it usually requires 2 email servers. One with an MX record priority of 10 and the other with 20 (or something like that). So if mail has trouble getting to the primary, it has a secondary to try.

I don't know how yahoo or the others handle relaying but rule of thumb is it's not a good idea if avoidable, so they may not allow server to server email relays. Spam makes relaying risky business, in other words. 🙂
