Backup copies...

So my new graphics card came with some games, and I'd like to make a backup copy of the CDs you have to use to play them, i.e. Prince Of Persia comes in 2 discs, but you only need one to play.

I want to copy only the necesary disc to run the game, as they'll get scratched overtime and I want to preserve the original.

I'm using Nero 6.6.0.8 and a Pioneer DVD-R 108. Nero gives me constant "Unrecoverable read errors" and I abor the process. I can't seem to be able to copy this disc. Is it possible that it has some sort of copy protection?

I tried with a previous version of Nero and another recorder (LG) but no avail.

I know the discs work, as I installed and run the games without problems.

I've heard that Nero isn't the friendliest when it comes to making images from a copy protected disc. You can try Alcohol 120, which has a free trial period. There are also a number of other programs out there to make 1:1 copies of discs, but I'm not personally familar with them.

Haven't tried that yet. I tried Alcohol and CloneCD, both with the same results. Read speed is soooo slow (0.08x) that I cancel the whole thing after 10 minutes. Read errors still occur.

There are supposed to be read errors, that's the point. Copy protection on CDs consists of putting a bunch of bad sectors purposefully on the disc. Copy software like Nero will attempt to fix those errors and on the copied CD, the errors won't exist so the protection knows it's not a legit CD.

CloneCD and Alcohol and such will copy the bad sectors as well. It will go VERY slowly through the beginning part of the disc where the bad sectors are, but eventually it will push through that part and the read spead will jump way up.

Edit: Or just go to gamecopyworld.com and download the no-cd patch for Prince of Persia, then you won't have to use the CD at all to run the game and it won't get scratched up

How in the world do you scratch a disk that's in the drive?

It could be your drive too. Some drives cannot copy newer protections - no matter the software.

Checkout cdfreaks.com and read up on 1, 2, and 3 sheep burners. You may have a 1 sheep. I've got a good 2 1/2 sheep burner.

Presumably he will have to remove the disc at some point for some reason, won't feel like finding a jewel case to put it in, and it'll get scratched. Have you ever looked at the movie side of a rented DVD? It's terrible.

I remember when backing up Diablo 2, it would take forever with Alcohol, but it worked. I think it took like an hour or more to copy a disc. Try the latest version of Alcohol and leave it until either an error comes up or it finishes.

I don't, but my brother and sister will. They'll leave the discs on the desk, outside their sleeves and eventually they'll stop working. I know it because it happened before. Making a backup copy of the disc seems only reasonable.
