backup before installing XP

I know this is such an obvious common sense thing, but it bears repeating. Always do some kind of backup before upgrading your operating system. I prefer to make a ghost image of my whole boot partition. At minimum, backup your critical data files.

Last week I installed 2600 XP on my computer. Talk about a terrible install. I must have sent ten "serious error reports" to Microsoft within twenty four hours. I got one of the worst blue screens of death I have ever seen. I was kind of shocked the install went this bad, because I have had good success with most beta versions on this same computer. I am probably at fault for much of this, because I was trying to get programs to work that are known to be flaky with XP, such as ECDC 4.05. Anyway, I finally got fed up and was able to bounce back to my Windows 98 install in less than half an hour and this whole nasty experience was just a bitter taste in the back of my mouth.

Two days later, I decided to install XP again. Guess what -- it installed and works great. I did completely uninstall ECDC first, plus some other programs. Right now, it is running fantastic.

If I would have skipped ghosting my install before upgrading the first time, I would have probably been forced into a clean install, and I would have been hating Microsoft.

PS -- this is one more reason not to register your computer until the thirty days are almost over. This way if you decide to do what I did, you won't be forced into activating again. This might entail a phone call to Bill.
