Backup a folder weekly but not to .bkf

I have a folder that I would like to simply copy to an external drive every week automatically. I looked at the backup utility included with windows xp (ntbackup) but it looks like the only option is to backup to a .bkf file. I'd rather have the folder just copied in a normal state to the drive. Is there any tool built into windows to do this?

I suppose I could write a batch script and have it run with task scheduler, but I am afraid of how it will react to files that are in use or things like that at the time of the backup.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

David
