backpacking in europe

Hey guys,

i was wondering if anyone had gone backpacking in europe in the april period.

i'm looking for some backpacking company that takes care of accommodations and travel (sort of like a multipass thing, with certain flexibility), where i can backpack around for about 3-5 weeks (thats what i'm thinking right now.)

comments and suggestions please? please reccommend good companies!

THIS is what one of my friends had reccommended, however that is for may and i want something for april.

edit: fixed link, sorry

I go to the site and get:

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack provides enhanced Web, application, and communication services for Windows NT Server 4.0. So if you're setting up a simple Web site on your corporate intranet, creating large sites for the Internet, or developing component-based applications, the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack provides a simple, flexible way to make your existing Windows NT Server 4.0 an even stronger Web and applications platform.

We welcome your feedback! It's important that we incorporate your feedback into our software. Please send any comments or suggestions to iiswish@microsoft.com.

You dont need to hire a company.
just get a rail pass and a travel book like "Let's Go Europe" and go crazy.
I went with some friends for 2 months and we had the best time in our lives.
If you're going alone, don't worry, you'll meet alot of cool people at the hostels.

that was my plan after college but the costs were just insane. I figured somthing like 10k for 5 months. I ended up putting the money I saved toward my student loans 🙁

I second contiki, it's organized and often less expensive and more fun than going by yourself.

I agree with waylman.

I've done the backpack + railpass + hostels deal. Feel free to ask more questions should you need to.

This is all you need:

Decide your starting and ending point and buy a plane ticket. Maybe select a central-european city like Frankfurt.
(I prefer Expedia.com)
You'll most likely want a Eurrail Youth Flexipass (if you're under 26).
Decide which trains you need to go where and when.
Find yourself a hostel as you go.

As long as you stay in Western Europe, you'll have no problem with Internet access during your trip.

Note 1: I prefer to travel alone.

Note 2: Die Bahn is also great for Western European countries besides Germany.

I'm doing a three week backpacking trip this summer as well. But my question is are there any packs you guys would recomend? We will be doing alot of hiking, but I would also like to take it on the plane with me. So a good pack to last for 3 weeks. Any suggestions?

Best thing to do is to go to an outdoor sporting goods store like Galyons or REI. Fill them up, try them on, and see which is most comfortable. Don't worry about brand, though Kelty is one of the more popular ones. External frames are preferred. If you'll be travelling in the summer, you need to pack far less than you think. I've gone six weeks on 7 pairs of underwear, three bathing suits, two pairs of pants, a few t-shirts, 7 pairs of socks (most important), two pairs of shoes, and one windbreaker/sweater.

May want to read this.

Besides the backpack itself, you also need a light-weight duffel bag into which the backpack can be placed. You also need a good water bottle. Extra clips and straps may also be necessary.

If a pack has an external frame, can you take it on as carry on? Or with a pack like this, that wouldn't be a concern? (Checked in as luggage)

Years ago, when I was backpacking across Western Europe... I was just outside Barcelona hiking in the foothills of Mount Tibidabo. I was at the end of this path and I came to a clearing and there was a lake, very secluded. And there were tall trees all around. It was dead silent. Gorgeous. And across the lake I saw... a beautiful woman... bathing herself... but she was crying...

Here is the pack I bought.

I am 5'5" and this bag is perfect. It has two big, zippered compartments compared to one large one at the top that requires everything be taken out to find what you need.

I have taken this bag on many airplanes without checking it. I just put it into a large, nylon, zippered bag that I bought at Sports Authority for like $20. It fits into the overhead bins.

You might want to check out this article from REI: Link They explain it quite well.

I have been thinking about backpacking for 3-4 weeks around Europe as well... what are the estimated financial costs for you who have gone on your trips? How much do you think you have spent total (including plane tickets, travel passes, sleeping arrangements, supplies, packs, equipment, etc)?
