Backing up Windows 2000

Hello, I just installed windows 2000 from windows 98 and I like to play with the registry to learn some tweaks and other ways to prevent things from being used on my computer. But in 98 if i did something wrong i could go into command prompt and type in sysedit and bring up my past 5 registries and i could restore one that easily.

Well i was messing with the windows 2000 registry and messed it up by accident and it wouldnt restore it and i had to format.

I like playing with the registry because i learn alot from it but i want to know if there is any way of getting my computer to load again with a backup working version of my registry.

I tried the option "Last good known configuration" and it didn't work, just loaded the screwed up version i broke.

Is there anyway possible in windows 2000 to do something like this?

Thank you,
Dave

Yes.

Do a System State backup. Backup to tape, file, whatever. It doesn't matter where.

Ntbackup will *also* copy your registry to c:\winnt\repair\regback when you do a system state backup.

If you get so hosed you can't boot, you can boot to the recovery console and copy files from c:\winnt\repair\regback to c:\winnt\system32\config to restore your old registry.

You may also wish to install the recovery console on the hard drive by running winnt32 /cmdcons
