I just won some classic Nintendo cartoons on ebay recently, and I really wanted to keep them forever, so i wanted to know the cheapest way to back them up as *.avi's or *.mpeg's on my computer. this way, i could burn them on a cd-r and lock them up in the corner of a private bullion vault for all eternity.

where can i order the hardware? can it be purchased at bestbuy, etc? is it expensive $$$??

i am a very sentimental person, and these old movies mean alot to me! thanks

As for hardware, you just need a Video-In jack on either a video card or a tv-tuner card or whatnot. It's not too expensive. As for software, I know there are plenty of things to do it well.

Make them into VCD's. The quality is roughly the same and the average 90min video will fit on one disk. If you run WinXP, the Movie Maker app will make passable copies as long you don't select too low a compression level.
You can use an inexpensive TV tuner card and whatever capture software that comes with it or MSI makes a decent GF2 video card with VIVO called the G2Ti Pro - around $125US, it comes with good software for recording external video to VCD's or whatever.
