backing up gmail

So I want to close one of my gmail accounts but I want to back up all the emails I have on that account (only 33mb). Is there a way I can just download all my emails to my computer or something so that I can look at them in the future if I need to even after I've closed my account. I think you can do it with an email client but I was wondering if I could simply just download them all in a html format or something that would not require extra installations

You can definitely do that in Thunderbird. You'd have to scour the Gmail site to see if they offer any kind of bulk download.

Just setup the Thunderbird account as a POP3 account and it should download all your emails.
