backing up files via DOS

SINCE i'm having issues with xp/safe mode etc...i can manage to get into dos, how do i backup some files with dos and an external hard drive?
i know the folder locations, just want to know what i need to do, thanks.
I do have an extra internal HD, partitioned into d,e,f,g
maybe i could move the files into one of those partitions?
first i'd have to make sure they're listed.
any help would be great, thanks.

If the drive is formatted with NTFS, you cannot. Grab a linux live CD like PCLinuxOS or Knoppix or Ubuntu and do it with them.

doh, it's NTFS, so it won't work, guess ill have to do the pclinuxos way... *gulp*

Grab BartsPE, build a disk, boot, copy files to external media 😉

do a parallel install of xp (install xp, leaving current file system intact, and install xp to say c:\windows2\)

therefore u get into windows and can copy files any way you like.

NOTE: if u do a parallel install do not use the same logon name as it will overwrite your older documents and settings. label it something easy like "backup"
