I have a benQ DW1640 I've tried ripping dvd's to my drive with various programs with no luck. I've been able to rip one dvd to my drive on my last computer I remember it being very annoying and having to try a lot of different programs. Basically the same problems as last time. I downloaded this hacked firmware for my drive to disable protection on the drive which helped for it to recognize the dvd and let me play the dvd on my computer.

programs I've tried:
DVD decrypter
DVD Shrink
AnyDVD
DVDFab

I just want to backup my movies should it be this hard? whenever I do find a program that works i get errors during the rip process.....I am starting to think there is something wrong with the drive.

Thanks for reading my long and boring also annoying post

Are you trying to keep your backups on your drive, or are you burning backup discs?

Burning to new discs is easy enough.

DVD shrink should make the right files for you to burn to a blank DVD. Then use your burning program (nero etc.) to burn those files to a blank DVD.

Done.

What kind of errors in the rip progress do you mean? Like it will stop due to protection or something, or that it will just get some random errors and be unusable?

I/O Errors
Read Errors

I just googled up some stuff seems checking:
"In DVD Decrypter to into Options and on the I/O tab make sure you checkmark the box "Ignore Read Errors" and set "Software Read Error Retries" to something low...I picked 2.

It will take a l-o-n-g time to read through all those errors, but at the end of the process you should have a working backup."

I am going to try this I don't care if it takes a long time as long as it works and I'll slowly backup my dvds

Well good luck. Do you know if it might be that your discs are beat up and scratched?

"This was in Peripherals" I said (as I was leaning in to get a closer look at your window)... and she did not believe me ;)

I'm gonna go with drive problems as well. You shouldn't need to modify any of those settings to get this sort of thing working. I've used DVD Shrink on 4 different drives, all different manufacturers and all different speeds and never run into problems that you describe even after countless discs.

Ripit4Me
Fixvts
DVDShrink
Nero

first 3 are free

Kind of makes a ripping suite. First one calls up the others as needed.

Dvdfab is currently the best program out there. For a very small license fee you get the
full legit program, with Lifetime Upgrades ... be sure you are using the Latest non beta version
The author is always updating to accomodate new types of dvd protections

If the disc isn't messed up I'm going to say its the drive.

I always use a program such as DVDDecrypter to break encryption and saving the resulting image/files to the hard drive (although now I use DVDFab because DVDDecrypter can no longer work for all DVDs seeing as how it is no longer updated for newer encryptions).

After that its DVD Shrink if I'm going to burn it to DVD5.

The only time I've ever had errors is with a bad disc, sometimes from already burned discs.

Some things you can make sure and try:
make sure the disc(s) are clean - a soft, clean cloth rubbing from the center of the disc and out (do not rub in circles)
try burning at lower speeds (not really going to help if you're getting errors reading the source...)

Granted if the problem is your drive it isn't too bad seeing as how decent ones can be had for under $40

I've suspected it was the drive from being how much trouble i've been having. I have been able to rip one movie to my HD ( Running Scared ) so it has worked before. I am also confused why there is a problem if the drive can play the DVD's I put in perfectly.

Also this DVD is new there really isn't any scratches

Well it could be possible that it is reading the disc at a slow speed, but when you're ripping it ramps up the speed just to extract the data there (and not play it at 1:1 realtime) - perhaps that is where the errors are coming from.

I have only used DVDFab Decrypter once, so I'm still familiarizing myself with it. However I do know that DVD Decrypter can limit the read speed (to 1x). Perhaps try doing this when decrypting/ripping to your HD. If you are going to burn, do the same thing and limit the write speed to 1x (unless you don't get errors/coasters burning at higher speeds, which would be very odd indeed). Although I wouldn't call such a "solution" ideal, as it would take forever and a half to copy movies in such a way (although I can remember a time when I messed with such speeds :p).

And as tw1164 just mentioned, you should definitely check to your firmware out.
