Backing up a drive

I just downloaded the Ultimate boot CD(from Here) and was wondering how I might back up a drive onto another drive and make the backup only one file(like an .img or something) instead of copying all the folders/files onto the other drive. The hard drive I'm backing up is actually dead and I'm using the freezing method to see if it will kick back up for just long enough to copy the drive(its not that big a few gigs). I don't know how well this is going to go. This is just sort of a last resort thing for a friend.

Ghost is your best choice. But you do realize making an image takes longer than direct copy of the data. If you want to make sure the hdd stays cool or shall I say cold, wrap it in plastic and submerged it in non mineral oil (cooking oil will do) and then place the container of mineral oil submerged in ice water. This will keep the hdd in freezing temp.

I would use Acronis to backup the entire HD. Then just clone it to a new one.

If the bag leaks, be sure to rinse the hard drive well afterwards. :)
