backing up a DNS server's information

So my server decided to fubar on me while I was away. It won't boot without a 'Services.exe terminated unexpectedly' shutdown. I've tried all the microsoft knowledge bases but they didn't help the problem.

So I'd like to save all the DNS information (usernames, groups, etc) onto the data partition so when I reinstall the server OS the info isn't lost. Is this possible? If I can find a copy the new OS will be Windows Server 2003, otherwise back to the current 2000.

Are you trying to backup DNS information or user and groups? These are two very different thing. Is this server a domain controller?

I'll assume your talking about your user account information stored in AD. If so then you should follow the Active Directory Operations Guide. It shows you everything you need to do to restore AD. Also you can't restore this information to a Windows 2003 domain. It can only be restored back to a Windows 2000 domain. DNS information is also stored in AD.

Sorry, it's been a long day. Yes this is a domain controller. So if I upgrade to a Windows 2003 Server domain the users/groups will need to be reconfigured?

Whoa. You would rather reinstall the system than attempt to fix the problem? Have you tried booting into safe mode? Does services.exe terminate with any error code? Are you sure your hardware is not faulty?

Do you have another domain controller?
