Background check and salary verification

I accepted a job offer and need to go through a background check with a contracted company. During my interview with HR I told them my salary with bonus but didnt tell them it was including bonus. Now when submitting my work and salary history online to the third party bg check company, I separated the base and bonus. It was only a 3k difference but will this give me issues? What do I say if they say there are discrepancies? Do the bg check company really ask HR what I quoted?

If the 3rd party has separate fields for such; they will put 1:2 together and come up with 3.
they will have seen it before and provide the client with the breakdown and summation.

No worry

You'll be fine.

Do you mind following up here? I definitely fluff my salary and got a nice 40-50% boost few years ago thanks to this.

PSA: You are not actually required to tell them what your paycheck was at ANY company, ever, in your entire life.
Its none of their fucking business. They pay you want they want to pay you or what you can negotiate for.

Having said that:
They also arent required to hire you, and if you choose to be difficult guess what?

Most companies will only provide dates of employment and eligibility for rehire when a background check company calls them. It covers their butt legally.

You will be totally fine. In the very off chance that they flag the difference, just explain that you put in your total comp package when you were asked for compensation details. They will totally understand that.

<----- works in HR systems and has set up background check processes, including the flags for bg check failures

[edit] Reread your post. Background check company is not going to talk to the recruiter you are working with to find out what you told her. They run the check entirely based on what you filled out on the bg paperwork. Nobody is even going to notice the discrepancy, nor would they care if they did. 🙂

^^ This. I instruct my peeps to only verify dates of hire nothing more.

I just found out today that because I work for the state, my salary, title, and name will be posted on a public website for all to see. I foresee some pissed off co-workers.

Simply put they ask that and verify that to keep some insight as to what other companies are legitimately paying...rather than speculation.

There are places online like glassdoor.com or salary window that employees can post earnings, reviews, etc. But most are bogus.

I would not worry about it at all.

Its better than lying on your education or work experience.
