I'm going on a 12 day jaunt out of town in 15 days and figure I'd like my tomatoes and squash to get some water while I'm gone, at least somewhat. I could ask my neighbor but figure I'd prefer to install something.

The quick-ass way (I dreamed this up today) would be to get a Y connector at the hose spigot in back of the house and run two hoses and have them trickle water ever-so-slowly onto the growing patches (which are ~2'x12' for the tomatoes and ~6' x 10' for the squash). Distribution would be nil, I'd put the hose ends somewhere in the patches and hope for some dispersal.

I bought an Orbit 62061N-91213 Single-Dial Water Timer, but it remains in its packaging right now. I have no accessories to use with it. Figure I need:

1. Soaker hose(s)

2. Y hose connector if water's to go to two separate patches (there is about 6 feet separating them)

3. Backflow preventer (I've read that this is important, but I have no idea what kind to get, how they work, I suppose you put this between the hose spigot and the timer?

4. Pressure regulation on my water service. The pressure is probably around 94psi right now.

What do you think? Can I get by with no pressure regulator for those 12 days?

Will a simple backflow preventer like this work for me?

I could just deep-water and hope for the best (It's highly unlikely that any rain will fall here during those 12 days, but tomatoes are said to do OK with little water and the squash have stopped growing basically at this point, the kabocha squashes are just hanging on them and slowly maturing.

TIA for advice, info!

why not get a big fan sprinkler with a hose attached to your timer? Will do 6 feet no problem?

Backflow preventer? Only needed for inground stuff.

Pressure regulater? not sure why this would be an issue as well? Your inside waterpressure is 94psi?

The quick-ass way is to pay a neighbor kid to come over and water your garden every day.

Yeah, I think the pressure is about that. Inside/outside, what would be the difference? It's that measured at hose spigots at the outside of house. The timer itself says on the housing that it will take up to 100psi, but I don't trust that. I saw posts from people saying theirs failed because of water pressure.

The fan idea, well, I don't want to get the leaves wet because of mildew. It's fairly humid around here, not 90%, but typically over 60% or higher. The squash already are getting pretty bad mildew. Still, I could go that route, the mildew is beyond controlling now anyway.

Backflow preventer not needed if above ground? Didn't know that.
