Ok, so my friend bought one of those external enclosures from here: http://www.pcmicrostore.com/PartDetail.aspx?q=c:36232;p:10501175

I saw it in his room and he said it wasn't working, so obviously I said I'll fix it because I figured he was just doing it wrong and I wanted to see how one of these worked anyways.

Anyways, I go home and throw a hard drive in there, and first thing I notice is you have to turn the hard drive upside down because the IDE cable in the enclosure was backwards, like the little nob that has to fit in the slot was on the bottom of the cable, and the slot on the hd is on the top of the ternminal. So, I think, oh well I can get around that, and I figure that's why it was not working for him. With the hard drive upside down, I plug in the power cord, and turn it on. It fires up, but it doesn't seem to be spinning as fast as it should, and nothing happens when I plug the usb into the computer. So I figure, hey maybe it's just a bad hard drive, because it was a Hard drive that I just bought from someone online and I had never tested it. So I grab an 80gb WD that I had lying around that I knew worked. I plug it in upside down and turn it on, and it doesn't spin up at , just get's really hot on the bottom, so I turn it off. I think, what the heck, it shouldn't be that hot. So I grab this old 4.3gb that I know FOR SURE, no doubt works. And the same thing happens; a sticker that was on one of the computer chips actually melted away. So, now I decided to compare the power cord to one on my power supply. I first notice the yellow and the red are switched around. So I test the voltage, and sure enough the 12v power from the yellow was going to where 6v should be and vice versa. Crap, no wonder it was getting so hot and not spinning.

So basically, I'm out 3 hard drives, and my friend is most likely out his 120gb WD that he bought specifically for this purpose. What would you do from here? I'm trying to figure who actually makes this and ask them to buy me some new hard drives or something haha. I'm pretty mad though because now I can't build my server box because my 40gb is fried.

(I don't know how well pics will show anything, but does anyone want any of anything?)

Yeah, the was the exact problem (not counting that the ide cable is upside down) because I'm using a drive in it right now and it actually is working.
