Benchmark of the 4850 against a plethora of all other video cards
It spanks the old 3870, close to the 3870x2, near par, and sometimes faster then a 9800GTX, and no real match for the old 8800gt or even 9600gt, it would seem to be one bad mother of a video card and I am sooooooo looking forward, myself, in seeing what the 4870 and 4870X2 is going to do if the low specs 4850 is doing this good.

And correct me if I am wrong but is this the same price or lower then when the 3850 came out? I know I paid this much for my 3870 many months after it come out, and this thing is just a monster against it.

See link below by deepinya (haha love the name) for the link to the ASUS brand.

Here is a quote from way down there for links to the rebates for newegg or Frys. All credit for this trouble goes to Jessica69 (Deb) for her hard work in helping all of us out. THANKS DEB!!

The only negative about this card is the enormous heat output. I thought this was supposed to be an eco-friendly card that runs on low wattage?

I don't know about "enormous". It's actually quite energy efficient relative to performance. And in a properly cooled case, no issues at all.

See this: http://www.guru3d.com/article/...force-3d--powercolor/7

You shouldn't confuse a horrible HSF on the 4850 with high heat output.

From your link:

when the GPU is fully utilized it'll reach 85 Degrees C quite fast and easily. You can physically burn yourself if you touch the cards copper parts during a stressed session.

Please make sure you have a very well ventilated PC, as that heat is dumped inside your PC due to the single slot cooling design. This is definitely one of the negatives of the product.

My point is exactly that. Its a pretty huge negative since summer is here.....and I consider 85c blowing out of my case a serious concern. lol

Plus, Im into quite computing so I dont have 5 fans sucking out the heat.

Why is the HSF horrible? The high heat output IS FROM the 4850. The HSF isn't making it. Its job is to move it someplace else. Won't be long before someone is selling cards that will exhaust it outside the case. Either way, its the 4850 making the heat.

You have to understand that it's is the poor HSF that is not allowing heat to be carried off the GPU fast enough that is causing the high temps. The temp is only at the core though, it's kind of deceptive.

The 2900XT appears to pull 122 watts more under load than a 4850.

Equivalent to placing a 120 watt light bulb inside your computer case. Now that will generate some heat. The 4850 at load is much, much cooler, only 10 watts more under load than a 3850.

The HSF isn't really horrible, it is just not adequete for the kind of power consumption (and thus heat output) that a performance graphics card has these days. Compared to these other cards the HD 4850 doesn't consume much power, but most other cards in this segment have dual slot coolers.

Obviously AMD wanted to show the efficiency of the 4850 and made this one of its selling points, so they wanted to go with a small single slot cooler. The consequence of that is high temps.

The gpu temp will show high but that does not translate to a high system temp. It's just that the heat is trapped in the gpu (= crappy HSF). I agree the card will run hot without aftermarket cooling, but the system temp will be just fine with good air movement.

3850 Peak power --- 95 watts
3870 peak power --- 105 watts
4850 peak power --- 105 watts
2900XT peak power --- 215 watts

God I can't believe they are selling these things for $170 after rebate! What an awesome price/performance! I can't wait to see what happens with the prices as the 9800gtx and 9800gtx+ start to come out.

Also, XFX has the double life time warranty on its cards, even if you overclock. Is there an AMD card maker which offers a similar warranty?

Would a Stacker 832 w/3 of the 4 spots on the side panel filled w/120mm fans help w/cooling this puppy?
Also, does anyone offer an aftermarket cooling solution & if so, will that void the warranty?

Was this a 1 day rebate or something?
If not, did anyone download the rebate form so they can upload it?

The ASUS rebate was supposed to be good until July 15. The e-tailers will be jacking these prices up now because they didn't realize in the beginning they were giving away so much technology for the money. Newegg plugged the hole in the dam I'm afraid. thankfully I scored 2 at BestBuy for $150 apiece.
