HI i am about to be getting (AT LAST) DSL hook up.
at the present i am using isdn.I am running 3 puters
on a lan via a netgear RH348 with a sky link 8 port switch.
for the change over i have purchased a netgear RT311 and intend to use
also the exsisting switch.
Now to the question :
The DSL service is supplied by sprint and the ISP is earthlink
i have allready the modem supplied by sprint in my posession its the
speedstream 5260 and it says i have to install the connection software ppoe.
Now do i just have to install this software on 1 machine get it up and running then
add the router/switch and other puters to the lan,or do i have to install the ppoe on
all puters on the lan,or is there other ways to make this all work?.suggestions would
be greatly appreciated .Thanks in advance and if you have any suggestion try to make it as simple as possible for this technically challenged person .
😀

Actually, if you are using a router, none of the computers should need the PPOE software. You should be able to configure the router to specify the username and password needed for PPOE. I used to have a NetGear RT314 and that was true for it.

Just remember, when using a router... it is the router that is directly connected to your service provider and all your computers are connected to the router with non-routeable IP addresses.

If the ?Earth? people provided you with ID, and Password.

You Install the Network with the Router; you plug the ID and Password to the Router?s PPPOE menu, and you are done.

Usually the ISPs don?t give the Info, they force you to install the PPPOE, and get the ID, and Password online.

So, you connect one computer directly to the DSL modem, you install the PPPOE you get the ID and PW (it comes on the screen during the installation).

When done you Install the Network with the Router, you plug the ID and Password to the Router?s PPPOE menu.

If every thing work OK through the Router, you can uninstall the PPPOE software, and the DSL Dialer.

Thanks Shmo / Jack MDS
Actually the Sprint guy gave me a tempory initial sign on name and password to use when i move to my new location ,hahaahah hell of a way to get DSL (new house Purchase).I will probably go about the hook up as recomended by Jack seems like a safe bet.I also found out from Sprint that with the purchase of the 1.5 mbs DSL you also get a static IP at no extra cost. Thanks a bunch guys for your time to help me out.
