i just bought a Leadtek 6800GT a little over a week ago, i replaced the stock cooler with a NV Silencer rev.2. i wasn't sure about the stock back plate though, but i decided to leave it on. right now my idles temps are around 47-48c, and load temps around 56-58c.

my question is it better to have the backplate on(it does get warm to the touch) or is it better to take it off or does it make a difference? here's a pic of the backplate:

prolly not a really big difference i would leave it on. Bro my junk ides at 36-39 loads at 40-45, and my P4 3.3ghz idles at 25C because its so freakin cold now.

junk=6800ultra 425/1135

thanks, i guess it probaly won't make a difference, i wanted to see if i get more OC out my card, and thought maybe the blackplate was some how holding it back. 420/1100, 440/1140 for benchmarking.

i had a leadtek 6800gt

and i was afraid of buying a VF700 since it didnt use a backplate.....and the backplate on this card got pretty hot. anyway i went for it, and the back of the card only got warm......also the back plate of the leadtek cooler was laminated on the side facing the card, and it had big chunky rubbery pads on it too....so i have no idea how it actually got soooo hot.

and from my experience....the heatsink wasnt attached all that tight. i was taking the screws out and the thing just fell off...... if you wanna improve the HSF id say...

remove the stupid laminate, probaly the rubber pads though, i imagine they are for protection

take the heat sink off....and flippin lap that thing becuase the surface isnt brilliant.

reapply with some AS5

wtf? are you sure? i'll check that out, i'm gonna try it without the backplate to see if there is any difference(and to see if it is laminated) thanks for the tip otispunkmeyer.

btw, i do have a NV silencer that i lapped and i am using AS5.
