Back ordering a domain?

I had my domain stolen right under me by Enom almost a year ago when I looked to see if it was available and waited a day or so and somehow it got registered. (I think that is wierd anyway, you type in a domain and no matter what it is, it is registered in two or three days)

Anyway, it is up for expiration in Dec, and I want it badly. Which company will I have the best chance of getting the domain by backordering?

I am afraid to type in the domain I want at any backorder website (pool.com, godaddy.com, etc) to see if it already is backordered for fear that it will happen all over again.

I tried backordering a domain once--it was registered at Verisign, so I did it on Verisign. Cost something like $79. So, the domain expired and nothing happened. Nine months went by during which Verisign wouldn't release it and eventually the previous registrant reregistered it, and Verisign sent me a note saying that it would cost another $79 to continue to have the domain backordered. I didn't bother.
