Just gave my nice LCD monitor to someone as a gift,

so I'm back to using an old CRT monititor for a little while.

It's bulky & huge, takes up so much desktop space (and I have a big desk) and the visuals are so different.

Time to shop for a new flat panel!

Hey, you're right. That's much better.
Thank you!

I had a 19" Sony CRT for many years. I always ran it a 1152*864 @100Hz and it was beautiful. Of course, it also weighed 60 pounds (approx 27Kg), generated more heat than toaster AND took up ALL my desktop's space. :(

I've since moved from a 15" LCD to a 19" very nice LCD (Viewsonic VX922) and haven't looked back.

The CRT needed some "warmup time" in order to look it's best. That was probably....about an hour, give or take. Then it was picky with source material. Videos always looked awesome, but games were hit or miss sometimes.

The Viewsonic, IMO has 95% of the best image quality of the CRT, but is like "this little" compared to it, and has 100% of it's possible image quality from the moment it's turned on.

LCD >> CRT.

Cliffs - LCD :

Perceived sharper text
Perfect geometry
Small size/weight/power consumption
Good enough color clarity and response time

CRT :

Dirt cheap (surplus Trinitron/clone tubes for ~$20)
Crazy contrast ratio / Deep blacks
What response time? :p

I'm sure input lag is a myth. I've used many LCDs and never noticed it. Hell, I own a Dell 24" LCD which is supposed to be among the worst, and I can't for the life of me get the thing to lag.

Dell 1905FP LCD using DVI input

There was no mouse-movement lag

It was crystal clear, sharp, not a single dead pixel, a real nice monitor.

But I bought that one around April 2005 on one of those special low price promo deals, & specs may be a little bit better now.

I haven't dug into shopping for a replacement yet, maybe when I get back in 2 weeks.

Recommendations welcome (you don't need to tell me to go to the video forum)

i only started using an LCD regularly when i started using a laptop instead of a desktop.

I had a 19" CRT that I miss quite a bit. i only had a complaint about it on the rare occasion where i was required to move it.

I gotta get myself a quality monitor lest my eyes weaken more than they already are. I have 20/500 vision right now.

The only crt i found was acceptable was the NEC/Mistu 22". 1920x14x0 @ 85hz was nice.

For grins I set up a flatscreen CRT next to my NEC LCD using Nvidia's multiply display thing and the comparison is quite stark. The LCD is without a doubt, hands down, the better monitor.

I always knew this but seeing one next to the other is real proof to me. Plus, the size and heat issues weigh in favor of the LCD even if the images were close which, again, they are not. I don't miss 90-lb monitors. :p
